Iain Banks was my favourite author for many years (halted only by his rather selfish demise) and this was one of the first of his books that I read. This contains all of Banks key elements. This book overcomes the classical genre distinction between fantasy, science fiction and mainstream novels: it's the novel of a complete artist, transcending categories to write without the limits of the traditional forms, playing with them all in a delicate fugue.
